News Media acquires MPC

Gatehouse parent, News Media Investment Group acquired the Monroe Publishing Co. in southeast Michigan and its assets for $5.2 million cash. The acquisition includes the Monroe (Mi.) News, a 190-year old afternoon daily with morning weekend editions and a circulation of 14,000 daily and 21,000 on Sunday.

“The publications are located near our current cluster in Michigan which makes it the ideal tuck-in acquisitions to integrate into our current operations,” Michael E. Reed, president and CEO of New Media, said.

New Media owns 22 papers in the region, including the Hillsdale Daily News, Sault Ste. Marie Evening news, Holland Sentinel.

The news comes on the heels of New Media purchases in other parts of the country as well. The company in March acquired the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s parent company, Stephens Media LLC and bought the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch and its printing plant in June.
